Reliability, Validity: Making Qualitative Research More than Just Credible

In 1986, Guba and Lincoln[1] dramatically moved the field of qualitative research forward when they offered an alternative to the more traditional quantitatively oriented criteria for rigor in research. Whereas the traditional criteria for judging research included internal validity, they suggested an alternative set of criteria of credibility. External validity became transferability, reliability became dependability, and objectivity became the ability to be confirmed.

This leads us to six definitions which serve as boundaries for the assessment of qualitative research
